EU Socialists Demand Suspension of Israel Partnership Deal

(MENAFN) The second-largest political group in the European Parliament, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), has staged a protest calling for the suspension of the EU’s association agreement with Israel, according to reports.

During the demonstration inside the European Parliament building in Brussels on Wednesday, lawmakers displayed signs reading “Suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement Now!” while urging EU institutions to take stronger action regarding the situation in the Middle East.

As stated in a group statement accompanying the protest, the S&D bloc called on the European Council to suspend the long-standing partnership framework with Israel. The group also shared images from the protest on social media platform X, reiterating its demands for policy changes.

Among the positions highlighted in the post were calls for “immediate sanctions on violent settlers in the West Bank,” the establishment of a Palestinian state as a central EU priority, and the reconstruction of Gaza. The group also urged Israel to halt military operations in Lebanon.

The EU-Israel Association Agreement, which has been in force since 2000, provides the legal and political framework for trade relations, cooperation, and diplomatic dialogue between the European Union and Israel.

The protest reflects growing political debate within EU institutions over the agreement’s future, amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East and renewed calls from some lawmakers to reconsider Israel’s privileged trade status with the bloc.
