US Refueling Aircraft Presence in Israel Raises Airport Strain

(MENAFN) According to a report by a media outlet, the United States has asked that dozens of its aerial refueling aircraft remain deployed at Ben Gurion Airport in central Israel until the end of the year.

The continued deployment is reportedly creating significant operational challenges at the airport, since the aircraft are taking up a large portion of the available parking space. As the report explained, "as they are occupying most available parking areas within the airport," which is reducing normal airport capacity and complicating logistics.

A similar situation is being observed at Ramon Airport in southern Israel as well. The channel cited Civil Aviation Authority chief Shmuel Zakai, who indicated that the pressure on infrastructure is not limited to a single location.

He warned that the consequences could become more severe if the situation continues, stating, "If these aircraft are not evacuated in the near future, Israel is expected to face a difficult summer in the aviation sector, as this could prevent foreign airlines from increasing the number of flights to Israel."

These developments are unfolding amid a growing US military footprint in Israel, alongside persistent regional tensions connected to the ongoing conflict dynamics involving Iran and the potential for renewed escalation.

Tensions in the region have intensified since joint US and Israeli strikes against Iran in February. Iran responded with retaliatory attacks targeting Israel, as well as US-aligned partners in the Gulf region, in addition to shutting down the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire was implemented on April 8 through mediation involving Pakistan, but subsequent negotiations in Islamabad did not lead to a durable agreement. Later, US President Donald Trump extended the truce indefinitely. He also stated on Monday that he postponed a planned military strike on Iran following requests from Gulf leaders, adding that "serious negotiations" are underway.
