India’s Modi Urges Middle East De-Escalation
According to a statement from Modi's office, the two leaders discussed the deteriorating security landscape across the region. Modi expressed "deep concern" over the escalation and reaffirmed India's "strong condemnation of attacks on Kuwait's sovereignty and territorial integrity," calling for "de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy" to restore peace and stability as soon as possible.
AN INDIAN NATIONAL AMONG THE DEAD
The call was prompted in part by a deadly Iranian drone strike on Kuwait International Airport on Wednesday, in which an Indian national lost their life. Kuwait confirmed that the Iranian strikes killed one person, injured 63 others, and caused significant damage to key infrastructure — including diplomatic missions.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed the attacks were directed at US military bases in Kuwait, framing them as retaliation for an American strike on Qeshm Island in southern Iran earlier the same day.
The strikes marked the latest flashpoint since Iran and Israel exchanged fire for the first time since an April ceasefire, against a backdrop of escalating tensions following recent Iranian strikes elsewhere in the Gulf.
ASIAN TOLL MOUNTS
The broader human cost for Asian nationals has been steadily climbing since the conflict erupted. Based on compiled regional reports, at least 26 people from across the region have been killed or remain missing since the war began in late February, when the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran.
The figures break down as follows: eight Indians — one of whom remains missing — four Bangladeshis, four Pakistanis, and one national each from China, Nepal, and the Philippines. Three nationals each from Indonesia and Thailand also remain unaccounted for in waters around the Middle East.
