Adam Hamawy Becomes New Jersey’s First Muslim Congressman After Gaza Medical Work
The 56-year-old Democrat defeated Republican candidate Gregg Mele in Tuesday’s midterm elections in New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District.
Born in Egypt and raised in the United States, Hamawy secured the Democratic nomination in a competitive primary held in June before going on to win the general election in the strongly Democratic district.
He is set to replace retiring Democratic Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman when the new congressional term begins in January.
Hamawy brings a background in both medicine and military service to his new role. A plastic surgeon and retired US Army combat physician, he served during the Iraq War and took part in humanitarian medical missions in several countries, including Bosnia, Sudan, Lebanon and Syria.
His medical work also included treating wounded Palestinians in Gaza, an experience that contributed to his public criticism of Washington’s support for Israel.
During a deployment to Iraq in 2004, Hamawy played a role in saving the life of Tammy Duckworth, who later became a Democratic US senator. Duckworth had been seriously injured after her Black Hawk helicopter was shot down.
Hamawy’s election marks a milestone for Muslim representation in New Jersey’s congressional delegation, while bringing his experience in military medicine and humanitarian healthcare into the House of Representatives.
